Day 2: Santa Fe
350km/220mi – 3h30min
Head back North towards Santa Fe, and enjoy the remainder of the day visiting New Mexico’s capital, renowned for its Pueblo-style architecture.
Explore:
- Take in the town’s vibe by walking around the Santa Fe Plaza, and admire the authentic Adobe-style buildings.
- Go window shopping for Southwest specialties including their intricate pottery.
- Check out the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
- For art aficionados, visit the Georgia O’Keefe museum.
Eat:
In Santa Fe, we enjoyed:
- La Plazuela At La Fonda
- Luminaria Restaurant & Patio
Stay:
- We recommend staying in Downtown Santa Fe, near the town plaza – we recommend Inn and Spa at Loretto.
- Lodging is more affordable outside the city-center. However, keep in mind that the drive into town and back is pretty long – we suggest La Quinta Inn.
Tips:
- Since you won’t be driving through many towns on the way up to Santa Fe, you can buy a picnic before leaving Alamogordo at Target or Walmart.
- If you are up for the extra drive stop by the Pecos National Historical Park on your way to Santa Fe. The park features archeological ruins, a battle field from the civil war, and Pecos Pueblo, an abandoned Native American community (extra 1h round trip – 55km/35mi).
- Although rated one of the top attractions in Santa Fe, we would only recommend going to the mysterious House of Eternal Returns (known as Meow Wolf) if you are travelling with children.
